Kore: Rafe, just tell me plainly what I have to do. If you mess up and tell me something you shouldn’t just rip I tout of my head and send me back where I came from. I can hardly object after what I’ve done since breakfast.

Marozi: You’ve guessed what Xander’s destined to be. Here. Until the end of time. In the shadowlands.

Marozi: There are predators here, looking for houses. And Xander is physically strong enough to fight them.

Marozi: I need to make sure he’s got the heart, the guts, to keep at it. For the entire duration of history.

Marozi: This is one of the beginning-things we set out to accomplish since the rebellion.

Marozi: It was your uncle Henok’s idea, said God had told him in a vision. And we all listen to Henok since the curse.

Marozi: I am to be waiting for him here…or rather now-and-here…and bring him back when he’s ready.

Marozi: Ves Xander will have a forever of solitude in this place.

Marozi: And you can’t give him memories now and make his mind wander or the enemies will have a solid chance at eating the well of souls.

Kore: Rafe, you know I can’t help it if he decides to obsess over me! Why don’t you give him this lecture instead of me!

Marozi: Because you’re in love with him.

Kore: Ha! What?!

Marozi: More people laugh at us old angels than you’d guess. It’s not very smart.

Marozi: If you think Xander takes offense at liars…good thing you didn’t deny it.

Marozi: Xander will live among us like Henok, serving his Lord according to the path he’s been destined to. And there’s no room for you in that path.

Marozi: You’ll break Xander’s heart and he’d never be able to do his job. I don’t care that he tricked you into falling for him.

Marozi: I don’t care that he started it. I don’t care that he’s using your heart to make me pity you and release him.

Marozi: We don’t get a second chance at this.

Author Notes:

When do we ever….

characters: Kore, Marozi

Kore asks Marozi for the straight story, because she’s been cracking down on riotous incidents all day like she was chasing Shane’s mind around and stopping an earthquake all night and it’s about time we got some honesty around here anyways. So Marozi’s going to bring Xander to the place he’s showing Kore, and he’s going to make him stay there.  Xander is supposed to be a kind of protective hunter to keep the wolves from raiding a game preserve of sorts.  Yeah yeah, the Hades thing, we knew all this right?  But as Marozi starts jumping back and forth in time, and I’m not even going to try to explain all that, it should be obvious; He who has an ear let him hear.  Anyways stuff starts to dawn on Kore.  Marozi helps out a bit: Xander, knowing exactly what his fate is, and terrified of the prospect of this, is trying to form a mental bond with Kore such that his own mind is shattered enough to not be useful for Marozi’s purposes.  She is his path to escape, and it has everything to do with the angel and nothing to do with her.  And yet everything.  Whatever gets Xander’s mind permanently out of the game, anything, he’ll tangle Kore up in his life, then torture and destroy her and come out wracked with guilt, or happily ever after and then tragedy or unrequited love, anything.  Xander is getting out and he’s using Kore to do it.  Marozi is not going to let Xander out flank him here though.  He’s motivated.
